4 Night Silent UK Retreat - Sitting out in Nature

TUESDAY 14TH MAY 2024  - SATURDAY 18TH MAY 2024
THE COACH HOUSE, SHARPHAM TRUST, DEVON

This retreat is created for those wish to explore meditation although we will practice Yin Yoga each evening.

In our time together, we will be exploring the wild and free practice of sitting out in nature, where we commit to staying steady in the natural world for longer and longer periods of time. We will start with an hour and over our time together, increase the length of sitting in one stretch.  Please note that if you prefer, you can take yourself into the main meditation hall or even your bedroom.

For some of you this might sound intense and it is, yet this is actually the most wonderful way in which to engage with your body, your breath, your mind and nature’s ability to support the efforts held within your own practice. We set up our container as we always do and we are encouraged to focus our awareness on the natural world both inwardly and outwardly.

The techniques will be simple with the intention to explore seeing, feeling and listening all the while encouraging us to experience the movements of our breath, the movements of our own minds and the movements all around us over longer and longer periods of time.

Yin Yang Yoga Retreat, Italy with Emma Peel & Laura Casa di Yoga

The Chinese Five Elements is a practical framework for self-understanding and this self enquiry becomes a journey within. Nature provides the most fundamental concepts in how we can live and navigate life, our lives and ultimately ourselves.

We have so much knowledge, we know so many things and so many different subjects but how much do we really know about ourselves?

Chinese Medicine says you have a gift, it is your right to find that gift, to learn how to care for it and to learn how to share it and that gift is yourself deepest most truest self. In Yoga, you are the thing to be discovered and we do not have to learn this, only to recall it.

This is an opportunity to immerse yourself into your Yoga and Meditation practice, to completely relax whilst surrounded by the wild beaches of San Pietro in Bevagna, Manduria, Puglia. This is a unique location with extraordinary views and the beautifully fresh vegetarian and vegan food lovingly prepared daily by Laura is truly wonderful.

Our days will open with Meditation followed by a dynamic Taoist and Indian inspired Asana practise. Evening practises will emphasise the space for receptivity and reflection through Yin Yoga married with Meditation and Pranayama.

After breakfast each day and throughout the early afternoon, you have space to relax, read, walk or swim in the sea. The farmhouse has 6 rooms in total (4 twin rooms and 2 triple rooms each with an ensuite bathroom), meaning the group will be small. There is both an indoor and outdoor yoga space with all the props we need for both dynamic and stillness practices and last but definitely least, the beach is only a 15 minute walk from the Masseria.

You will have the opportunity to take an Acupuncture treatment with me (at an additional cost) during our time together and Laura will host an Orecchiette cooking class on one of our days.

Included in the retreat price
2 Yoga classes each day
5 nights accommodation in a twin room (also triple available)

THE RIVER THAT FLOWS THROUGH US - PART TWO

An evening of Yin Yoga and Meditation practice with Emma Peel at The Light Centre, Belgravia

In cultivating a capacity for stillness and placing importance on being connected to the body we can perceive the infinite sensations that can happen within it. We can be more open to experiencing ourselves as flow.

Rooted in the potency of simplicity, our practice allows a subtle movement in perception, where we have the potential to open a door to another kind of reality, a spaciousness we can sense when the body, mind and breath are at ease when we are relaxed. When we can open to the energetic life of the body that moves through us and around us, there is much to learn about ourselves.

Experience a Yin Yoga practice married with Pranayama and Meditation by the glow of candle light in this two hour evening event. Soften and unhook from the week, allowing the time and space to explore the deeper throws of your body.

A powerful practise that will nurture a deeper exploration and observation of the body, heart and mind.

Evening practises will emphasise the space for receptivity and reflection through Yin Yoga Asana, cultivating a suitable environment for and guiding us towards evening meditation.

After breakfast and through the early afternoon, you have space to read, walk, swim, canoe or sleep on one of the hammocks or sun-beds.

Throughout the week we will be exploring not only our bodies and ourselves, but various techniques and skills used to find more space and comfort in Meditation. These will include Mindfulness, Pranayama (breath control) and Mantra .

We arrive at Basunti on the 7th May for lunch. That afternoon we will orientate ourselves within this new space and practice together that evening. We have four days of retreat schedule, a day off with an optional trip out followed by another four days of retreat schedule.

Once I have confirmed the retreat schedule, I will add this below. This will detail times of meditation, Asana, meals and afternoon tea with the free time including schedule for our day off.

Meals are being freshly prepared with much of the fruit and vegetables that are grown organically in the garden and supplemented by produce bought in the local markets.

Our food will predominantly be Indian village vegetarian with a number of western dishes. Fresh bread and cakes are baked each day for afternoon tea and we will have one locally caught fish supper.

Meals are served buffet-style on the large, spacious verandahs or in the sitting room of the main house.

GETTING THERE

Amritsar, the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh religion and famous for its Golden Temple, provides the nearest international airport with daily flights from London via Doha or Delhi.

If like me, you would like to arrive earlier, you can take time to visit The Golden Temple, Ram Bagh Garden, the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum or take a stroll through the nearby Rose Garden and Sakatri Bagh park.

The transfer to Basunti from Amritsar takes approximately three and a half hours by mini-bus. We leave Amritsar at 9.30am from the Ramada Hotel on Sunday May 7th arriving at Basunti for lunch.

You can book your flight with Joe Graham at The Flight Centre or call him: 0208 336 6464.
You can reference me.

On entering India, we are required to possess not only a valid passport but also a Visa.
You can organise that here: VISA

Please consult your doctor regarding vaccinations to ensure these are up to date.

As with any trip, it is worth considering purchasing travel and medical insurance before travel for your peace of mind.

MY FLIGHT DETAILS AND MY JOURNEY ONWARDS

If you would like to travel out with me, I am flying Thursday 4th May from London Heathrow with Qatar Airways, flight number: QR10, with a connecting flight in Doha on to Amritsar, flight number  QR 548, arriving 5th May at 2.05am.

I suggest booking a hotel for the 4th, 5th and 6th so you have a room to go in the early hours of the 5th to shower, rest and restore before exploring this wonderful city.
PLEASE NOTE THIS DETAIL ABOVE AND BOOK YOUR ROOM FROM THE 4TH SO YOU CAN CHECK IN AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE AT THE HOTEL

After the retreat I will be travelling to Mcleod Ganj, a suburb of Dharamshala. This is home to a large Tibetan population and the residence the 14th Dalai Lama.

You are welcome to join me on this additional adventure. (many are..).. This is not retreat, it is friends extending their adventure together. I will be staying in Mcleod Ganji on 17th, 18th and 19th May. I will travel back to Amritsar airport late afternoon / early evening 20th May as I would need to be checking in at the airport just after midnight. I will be flying at 3.35am on 21st back to London Heathrow, flight number QR549 with a connection at Doha, flight number QR3, arriving lunchtime the same day (21st) at 1.15pm - LONDON HEATHROW.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FLIGHT HOME IS VERY EARLY ON THE MORNING OF 21ST MAY
WHICH ESSENTIALLY MEANS WE CHECK-IN AT THE AIRPORT ON THE EVENING OF 20TH MAY.

ACCOMMODATION IN AMRITSAR

Having spoken to many of you already, it seems most people would like to arrive earlier to settle into the time-zone or travel before the retreat. This means people will be arriving at different times and from various location and require a different number of nights in this city. Therefore, I have decided that it will be less complicated if you book a night in Amristar yourself when you book your flight with Joe.

There are many accommodation choices us in Amritsar.

The Ramada Hotel which £65 a night and you do have the option with this to have your own room or share it and half the cost. A bigger room (deluxe) is £80 and again you can share this. There is also a suite which is £100 a night.

I will be staying at The Ramada Hotel because it is right in the centre and close to The Golden Temple.. My booking is from and for the night of the 4th so I can go straight to my room on arrival at around 3am, the 5th and 6th May.

I have arranged dinner on Saturday 6th May where we will all come together for the first time as a group. Our transfer to Basunti will leave The Ramada Hotel at 9.30am on Sunday 7th May.

I have organised dinner for us at Hyatt Regency Amritsar Punjab Province restaurant at 7pm on Saturday 6th May. I can meet you there if you are out exploring the city. I plan to walk and take in the city. I will be leaving the hotel Ramada at 5.45pm.

This restaurant has a wonderful outdoor terrace, fires, staff and most importantly, food. You can order from the main menu which I have heard features a well known and much loved Thali selection or eat from the buffet which again has outstanding reviews and means you can try a bit of everything!

This is on me. You need nothing other than a hunger…

ACCOMMODATION IN MCLEOD GANJ

Having spoken to many of you coming on to extend your trip after the retreat, it seems most people would like to stay in the centre near the markets and temples rather than a more remote place. This makes sense as we have just been in a very remote location for 10 night. Also, we have just had a swimming pool for the retreat so for this extension I have chosen a hotel that caters for location over a cultural experience. The experience is all around us.

There are many accommodation choices us in McLeod Ganji.

I am staying at Norbu and some of the group are staying at The Quality Inn BHagsu. Good reviews, great views and pretty central.

I have spoken to my hotel and they will help us hire a mini-bus to get us back to the airport in Amritsar. This is not a short journey. But, we will have time as we don’t have to be at the airport until midnight.

BEYOND ASANA

Friday 12th May is our day off and so I am planning an optional trip to the sunken temples of Bathu.
If the water level is good, we will travel by boat rather than road and the journey either way is around two hours. Some of you may prefer to stay at the centre, walk, relax and swim in the lake. This trip is optional.

This spectacular deserted complex of 8th Century Hindu temples was submerged by the lake waters in the 1970s. Each year as the lake levels recede the temples slowly emerge at the edge of the corn fields.

During your stay you can take a canoe trip to explore the stunning coves and inlets surrounding Basunti and see numbers of bird species and various native animals.

There are many walks around the local villages and of course, swimming in the pool or the many beautiful completely private places round the lake.

RETREAT IS NOW FULL… I want to take you all on this journey … in time, i will. x

FAQ’s

Q: How many people are going on the retreat?
A: Minimum 16 and maximum 17 people plus me.

Q: What time is the transfer on the 17th May back to Amritsar?
A: After breakfast around 9.30am

Q: Is alcohol served in Basunti?
A: Usually I would not have alcohol on retreat but we are all adults. Basunti can serve beer and wine (for an additional cost), but no spirits are available. As we get closer, we can make a group decision on this but my feelings are we stay alcohol free for our time at the venue.

Q: Is the WIFI at Basunti?
A: Yes however, WIFI - yes and it operates in the main house, around the pool and in certain parts of the garden and the meditation deck. It has to be noted that due to our venue being fairly rurally situated, the WIFI is not the quickest and guests will be requested not to download/upload heavy files, movies, videos etc as this would prevent anyone else will be able to use it.

Q: Are there mosquito nets over the beds at Basunti?
A: There are no mosquito nets over the beds but there are nets over all the windows. Please note that Basunti is not in a Malaria area but prevention is always advisable, so you might want to bring repellents.

Q: Can I do washing at Basunti?
A: Reply from Izzy at Basunti below

Yes, we have a laundry service done by the village lady who comes here during the groups season and it is not prohibitive in terms of cost. You can, if you like, wash small items yourselves and hang them on the verandas attached to the rooms, we have no problem with that.

It is hot in May, clothes will dry very quickly indeed.

If I have not covered everything above, please feel free to ask me questions. I can then add them to these as you may be helping someone else by asking. x

Yin Yoga and Sound event at The Dulwich Picture Gallery

In this Yin Yoga and Sound event at The Dulwich Picture Gallery we will expand our own experience of ourselves connecting to our most natural state of brilliance. By combing through the layers of the body, the layers of breathing and layers of mind, we are able to discover the natural state of ease and peace that is always underneath and in the background.

In this simple Asana practice married with the gentle sounds of Harpist Siobhan Swider, we will move through the body, stretching not only the muscles and deep tissues of the body but also our own capacity to experience movements of mind and the natural state of peace when the body, breath and mind can move together in harmony at an even pace.

We begin in the body as this is where we feel our practice, only to delve deeper and deeper, finally coming to rest in the core of the body whilst bathed by Siobhan Swider’s healing sound bath.

We each flow to an individual shape and the contours of this unique shape to which we all flow, is permeated by the elements of our own lives. Your body is a dynamic shape, moulding itself around the pressures which life puts upon it and the tensions of trying to shape our lives according to demands rather than our own needs. Yet, when the resilient life within is allowed the conditions to flow at peace, it flows smoothly around and the past all we meet, un-distorting.

THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT HOWEVER, I WILL BE BACK WITH MORE FROM JUNE ONWARDS.

A series of six Yin Yoga Asana practices at the Dulwich Picture Gallery

In this series of six simple Yin Yoga Asana practices with Emma Peel, we will move through the body in a sequential way, engaging the spine completely, stretching not only the tissues of the body and the ligaments of the spine but extending our own capacity to pay attention.

Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga as exercise, incorporating principles of traditional Chinese medicine, with Asanas (postures) that are held for longer periods. This course is suitable for all levels, Emma will provide guidance or adjustments to suit all abilities in each of the sessions.

Asana practices are married with a meditative awareness to facilitate the Yin qualities of yielding and tension release, allowing the body to recover and move through the world more freely. The more we learn how to soften, the more the whole body can participate in this action of gentle motions and the stillness.

Yoga mats and blocks will be provided but participants are very welcome to bring their own equipment if they wish.

The Shala Sanctuary: Reset to peace, our most natural state

The Shala Sanctuary: Reset to peace, our most natural state

Chinese Medicine describes The Human Being as existing on three levels, that of Body, Mind, Spirit. These three levels function happily together when we are in balance, healthy and at ease. Our bodies will move naturally and without difficulty, our minds too will demonstrate flexibility and steadiness and in our emotional life, we will respond appropriately to all the various demands made upon it.

All three levels are inextricably linked and the quality of harmony and moments of peace we have all touched on at various times in our lives, is described as these three layers moving in the same direction, at an even pace and in constant good communication with each other.

So what happens when we are overloaded and overburdened beyond our own capacity to maintain balance? And on what level of human experience do these stresses occur? In our practice, we are learning to work on all levels at once as, stress on one level of life, will effect another level because there is only the oneness of body, mind, spirit (Heart).

The human being has a very complex body and inner life, capable of creating the most creative and complex works of art, pieces of music and so on, yet there is a price we pay for our own complexity.

Lao Tzu said "I have just three things to teach: simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures.”

The Tao encourages us to be in touch with our own selves, particularly our deepest selves, for when we know who we really are, that is when we discover real peace.

When we are in resonance, like the clear tone of a bell, we re-member something in the deepest and most basic way. We can't know practice from outside of these three layers of reality. Come and learn to navigate your own individual body, the breath with all its individual grooves, your inner and outer worlds with all its people, things and happenings as it is the mind that navigates the meeting point.

An Experience Beyond Form

An Experience Beyond Form

Life seems to reveal itself through two opposing categories, we can’t experience waking without knowing sleeping. Although we cannot separate these ‘polarities’, we only want to land ever on one side. The labels we often give to our own qualities and to our practice much like Yin Yoga or Vinyasa, are techniques to become absorbed in the process. And when practiced together, a third more subtle quality is revealed.

Join Helen Russell-Clark and Emma Peel in this two hour workshop for a journey through the receptivity of Yin and the playfulness of Yang where the coming together, the blending reveals a third quality that is not of form and can not be put into words.

This is a perfect workshop for both yin practitioners who are looking to explore a more dynamic practice and yang practitioners who want to shift their perspective on how to approach vinyasa.

FREE WEBINAR - The Five Movements Yin Yoga Teacher Training

As a Yoga teacher, you know the resistance of being visible and the cost of being invisible. How do you recognise and inhabit the place of true meaning not only in the practise of Yoga, but in yourself, in your own practise and do you want to learn the skills to inspire this freedom in your students lives and bodies?

The Five Movements Yin Yoga Teacher training much like individual bodies, is a framework for a life as a liberated teacher filled with purpose. A mirror to the Tao, this training will help you illuminate your path, offering a system that can allow you a way to enter your practise life with a route of unlimited potentials and choices.

On this training, you will learn how to navigate different bodies, different lives with integrity in the various seasons of ones life by learning how to address individuality and modern life in an integrated practise.

The Tao encourages us to be in touch with our own selves, particularly our deepest selves, because when you know who you really are, that is when you discover peace.  Do you want to feel this for yourself and then learn how to share that method?

Based on the natural movements we see all around us in the patterns of the seasons, these patterns and aspects of nature can remind us of qualities we connect to, the resilient trees, the joyful spring flowers and the steady mountains like a bridge between heaven and earth.

Taoism is the notion that the unnameable way of things is such because it includes all things and trying to define this would only limit its meaning but is such because it include everything. Nothing is left out of this. The true meaning of Tao can not be described only felt. Would you like to learn the art of teaching experience that is rooted in theory with an ability to bring this theory to life in any body, accessible to everybody in modern life?

In this webinar I will share with you the fundamentals of Yin Yang theory, how the one becomes two, two becomes three and three becomes five from which the ten thousand things flourish. The Five Movements unpacks the basic theory of the phases  and will focus on introducing the basic theory and one phase as a way of introducing you to the potential limitless choices you have as an incredible teacher to impart this understanding on your students in a way you can keep practise alive not only in their lives, but in yours too. Learn about the mind body heart connection through feeling it for yourself with the skills and confidence to take this out into the world and share it.

Join me on this free two hour webinar Sunday April 25th 9am - 11.30am. You will need nothing other than your attention, curiosity and a willingness to challenge you current perceptions.

Yin Yoga and sound bath Meditation

“When sound, breath, and awareness come together, it becomes light…". Vasant Lad

An evening where we move beyond thoughts, ideas, time and space where limitations have the space to evaporate.

A Yin Yoga and Meditation practice by the glow of candlelight accompanied by the vibrations of Crystal bowls, Gong and other sounds with Emma Peel and Christine Charlotte.

This two hour event will allow the opportunity to grow our interior spaces with the time to receive a more nurturing and potent pace. Opening and maintaining receptivity in the body, heart and mind through Meditation and passive Asana so we may receive the resonance of sound as we learn to let go of our heads and listen with our bodies moving into a place of deeper knowing.

Practise will begin with breath work leading us to the Yin Yoga asana as the sounds become progressively softer, so will we. Each seat will be approachable allowing for the low lighting and encouraging a more inward experience and listening presence.

A powerful practise that will nurture a deeper exploration and observation of the body, heart and mind.

An introduction to Meditation

I am privileged to collaborate with Sweaty Betty, East Dulwich in sharing some insights into the art and science of Mindfulness and Meditation. This informal hour is intended to provide a space in which we can caress the edges of any bounded concepts of what Meditation is and what it is not.

We will explore tools that enable us to hold a quality of courage, so we can find ways to connect rather than escape our lives. Tools that can build a quality of generosity so we can develop greater intimacy and understanding of ourselves, our worlds, the world and each other.

This event is open to everyone, from beginners wishing to discover the benefits of Meditation and for those who know and love the practise.

The Five Movements series at Yogarise Peckham - Winter

The Five Movements series at Yogarise Peckham - Winter

The current of our breath is not separate from the current of the tides. The air we inhale, that animates life, is the same air that every other living creature draws in. We are energised by the same sunlight as are all flora and respond to the pull of the moon as do the tides.

Throughout these five workshops we will explore the essential qualities and essences found within the rhythmic patterns expressed within the seasons.

The intention is not only as a method to explore the spontaneous cooperation and continual process of natural change but as a way to understand ourselves, experience how we are not separate from the natural world and to explore our own potential to live harmoniously within this dynamic.

When we can recognised moments of being drawn to nature, resonating with a Spring day or a trickling stream we can be more sensitive to our own potential to flourish. As we learn to accurately perceive those outer movements we can become more perceptive to the inner movements within the dynamics of body and mind.

Through practise we recognise change as process. We learn how to examine and examining this through felt sense, we have the potential to understand these patterns as observed and studied through feeling. We all contain Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal and the more we understand ourselves and the nature of life, the more we can recognise the oneness and interconnected nature of all things and that we are nature itself.

Winter: The last in this series of workshops will deepen our understanding of the season of Winter and after separating these five movements, how we individually bring these teaching back into the whole and ultimately back into a place of meaning.

Aimed at deepening our understanding of this phase in the season cycle, we will explore the energetic representation of Winter's element Water, the organs Kidney and Urinary Bladder and how Winter may manifests in our inner and outer worlds.

Ancient Chinese philosophy believed nature was not something we visited at the weekends and by observing nature we could cultivate an understanding of life, each other and remind ourselves where and how we are unique while simultaneously aware of that which keeps us united.

Five Elements Yin & Yang Yoga retreat in Tiruvannamalai, Southern India

Inspired by the Indian Ayurvedic Medicine Five Element theory, this 8 day / 7 night Yoga retreat will be held at the beautiful Ashok Tree Ashram in the sacred rural surroundings of Paliapattu, Tirvannamalai, Southern India. Set in 13 acres of orchards, gardens and fields, this natural environment will place us in the simplicity and support our reconnecting with nature as part of the yoga retreat experience.

The word āyus means life and veda, refers to a system of knowledge. The retreat will not so much give a system of thought but awaken thought and contemplation where we can consider ideas in a journey to discovering and connecting to the roots of your Yoga. A dance between stretching the body and mind outside ideas and narratives with the intention of guiding those with a curious mind deeper into their own practise of Yoga.

This is a journey into and towards simplicity where we find comfort not by adding more and more externally aesthetically pleasing aspects into our experience, but through an intimate awareness of ourselves, we cultivate and fine tuning the qualities of feeling, listening and watching for the purpose of reaching deeper to our interior life.

A week long retreat with morning and evening Meditation practise, twice daily Asana practise of Yin Yoga and Yin Yang Yoga, seven nights accommodation, transfers from Chennai (return flights with BA are currently £450), three organic vegetarian meals a day with the most amazing seasonal fruit available throughout the day to snack on along with chai, herbal teas (some grown onsite), mineral water, tea and coffee, a sunrise hike to the top of Mount Arunachala, a day trip to Pondicherry, an evening temple visit, an introduction to Ayurveda workshop and an hour Ayurvedic treatment.

Nestled in between the gardens, orchards, and fields, the facilities at Ashok include a large open-air Yoga shala, Meditation bowl, temple area and swimming pool (which is currently being built). Also on the Ashok Tree grounds is the Sita Devi Charity School which educates around 100 primary school children per year. Karma yoga at Sita Devi can be one of the many optional daytime activities during the retreat.
